Our History

Nearly three centuries old, Fourways has operated as a private home, a restaurant and as a guesthouse under various owners. However, throughout the passage of time it has continued to retain its original character and attachment to the culture of Bermuda.

Fourways, located in the central parish of Paget, was built in 1727 of native coral stone and cedar. It was commissioned by John Harvey of Harvey’s Bristol Cream fame, who made it his home. It was aptly named Fourways because it spread modestly in all four directions and was enclosed within two and a half acres of walled gardens at Amen Corner, a vital crossroads in Bermuda for over 250 years.

Fourways’ reputation for gracious hospitality was established from the very beginning. Guests attending Mr. Harvey’s elegant dinner parties enjoyed lavishly cooked meals, an excellent wine cellar and – because they were forced to travel many miles by horse & carriage – they were offered overnight lodging as well. For more than two centuries this lovely Georgian home was retained as the private residence of the Harvey family and several other owners, and remained a fixture on the Island’s social scene. Extensive renovations and additions were made, but the uniquely Bermudian character of the house was carefully preserved.

After operating as one of the Island’s top guesthouses from 1945 to 1976, the property was sold to a group of local businessmen. Their vow to turn it into Bermuda’s top restaurant became reality when Fourways Inn opened to immediate local and international acclaim. It was praised by everyone from Gourmet Magazine to Vogue, not only as Bermuda’s best restaurant, but “one of the world’s finest”.

In 1986, the opening of The Cottage Colony, complete with swimming pool and international quality facilities, meant that Fourways was once again a true inn. The story of Fourways continues to be one of commitment to quality, yet the tradition of gracious hospitality that was established in 1727 remains constant and legendary. Bermudians, vacationers and business travelers expect, and receive, the finest in service and cuisine.

Today, we offer Fourways Inn as a gourmet restaurant and as a venue for multi-function group events, from board room meetings and presentations to larger special wedding receptions, anniversaries, birthdays and other celebrations. Our talented and dedicated staff await your call to fulfill your every need at the new and improved Fourways Inn. A warm welcome awaits you.
